Get tired the wallpaper on your phone quickly? Can’t be bothered searching for a new one yourself? Photo of the Day is an Android application, which utilizes the abundance of photographic works across several websites in order to make it quick and easy to replace the user’s wallpaper.
In today’s world, we constantly have access to new and exciting images. It is easy to become jaded by a photograph very quickly when there are so many high quality images to explore. It is therefore increasingly common to want to change the wallpaper on a mobile device. Photo of the Day uses the sites Flickr, National Geographic, and Fotki.Yandex. This triple threat not only keeps the user in touch with up to date photos from across the globe, it does so with the intention of providing the user with a new wallpaper.
Flickr tends towards photographs of European landmarks and culture,buildings, cities and people, as well as art and culture. National Geographic and Fotki.Yandexusually show images of natural landscapes and animals.
National Geographic contains numerous photographs of Africa, whereas Fotki.Yandex usually shows European nature. This variety causes the application to be quite an international experience. It is perfect for those who long to travel and see the world.
The application could use some work. There were problems with installation,and once finally successfully installed there were a few noticeable faults.
When a wallpaper has been applied it often has issues with alignment. The descriptions of Fotki.Yandex photographs are also written in Russian, which is a small inconvenience caused by using a Russian website.
Photo of the Day could be considered not to be user friendly, although it is nice to have various photos to browse through. The tag function is also quite nice. I was expecting the wallpaper to be changed automatically when I initially read the description of the application, and was disappointed upon realization that it does not. It is nice to scroll through the photos, but the user may not want to do that every hour when new wallpaper has been selected for your tag.
Although Photo of the Day uses excellent sites as a source of stunning photographs, in its current state the application does not necessarily replace accessing the sites directly. Although with some improvements, the application has the potential to dominate the photographic media world, and may prove to become quite addictive.
